Aliquippa’s second week brought cold weather and a windy back stretch. In the 4/5 race Jacob Yundt showed his dominance in the field with a consecutive win in the bunch sprint. Dan Greene had yet another strong showing in the 1/2/3 field and was able to take 2nd.
Thanks again to Beaver Valley Velo for hosting this great series.
The start of May brought two great local races and a mixed bag of crashes and breakaways for Iron City Bikes Racing. When all was said and done ICBR walked away with good results in the cat 4/5 fields. Jacob took his first ever win at Aliquippa, and Mike had his first podium of the year with a 3rd place at Race at the Lake in Kent, OH.
The annual Aliquippa Training Crit Series got off to a very wet start. Despite the rain, Iron City Bikes had strong representation in the 1/2/3 race (John, Paul, Steve) and the 4/5 race (Dave, Jacob). The 4/5 race went very well: A four-man break (Nehemiah McHugh, Greg Flood, Jacob Yundt, and Joe Biss) opened a gap with ~6 to go. The break held to the end of the race with the victory going to Jacob. Dave finished with the lead group in 8th place.
Shaky video of the finish (with narration by Emily!) below:
Unfortunately the rainy weather proved to be very unlucky for the 1/2/3 riders. Paul and John crashed early in the race and Steve flatted out with ~5 to go.
The second of the Mingo Creek road race series took place on a typical cold overcast April morning. Iron City Bikes sent Justin, Jacob, Ted, Mike, John, Steve and Dan. Congrats to Dan Greene on on the win in the 1/2/3s.

The local road racing season is officially underway. The annual spring road race series at Mingo Creek Park kicked off this weekend with perfect sunny skies and mild temperatures. Iron City Bikes was well represented with seven riders between the Cat 1/2/3 and Cat 4/5 fields. As usual for the course, some breakaway attempts were made but none stuck for too long, and the races came down to a field sprint. ICB placed two in the top ten in the 1/2/3′s (3rd – John Heffner, 7th – Dan Greene), and Justin Flagg posted a solid 9th in his first race back from a knee injury last year.
As the weather has finally started to get nice, it feels like it’s just about time for alleycat season to get started. The guys at Urban Velo are kicking off the year with the Spring Roll Alleycat on March 20. They have a ton of great prizes as well as Jeff Guerrero’s hand made Champions Rice Bowls for the for the first place man, woman and out-of-towner of the day.
